12 hours into a sleepy Sunday, with a few things accomplished, nothing of much import. The dog is clean though, and I actually managed to finish one sudoku puzzle; I had not been having much luck with the ones I had found, and finally got one done! I'm rewarding myself with a simple dinner on a rainy night.
Last Friday I wandered over to Santi's (Rockwell branch) and rummaged through the vegetable bin. There were several packets of brussel sprouts, a large basket of plump tomatoes, assortment of lettuce, mushrooms, and herbs. I took one of the b-sprouts, and saw, hidden behind the braggadocio tomatoes, a small container of what I thought were more sprouts, but upon further investigation, turned out to be very young looking kohlrabi! Wow! The leaves had been trimmed and likewise their elegant stems, but otherwise it was a hidden treasure indeed. I took it into my basket as well, tucking it gently among the sprouts, the nut bread, and some cheese.
Tonight, I roast my brussel sprouts, lightly tossed in olive oil and salt, while my kohlrabi is sliced along with some apple slices and a quick chop of dates for a crisp, slightly sweet, and refreshing salad. A healthy dinner reward for a pleasantly quiet Sunday.

Now that really is a healthy dinner! If I wanted to reward myself, it certainly wouldn't be with a vegetarian meal. ;-)
I left a comment on your Multiply asking if you got the sprouts in Rustan's Rockwell. Close -- Santi's is across the street. :-)
There are rewards and there are rewards. :D
Yes, I didn't check at Rustan's if they had sprouts, I'll keep them in mind next time around. Easier to access too!
Sounds like a wonderful meal M! There are too many things I consider "rewards" so I'm with both of you -- a vegetarian meal with brussels sprouts is a reward for me because aside from loving b sprouts it's kinda pricey so not something I have all the time...but crispy pata and Nono's Chocolate Oblivion is also a reward, well, for obvious reasons...they rock!
Shoes are also a reward...but that's another story ;)
Guys, I think the b sprouts are brought in by Frutesca because I saw them (same packaging) in the Spice and Flavors (sister to Frutesca owner) Salcedo Market stall...they also are bringing in fresh artichokes!
Holy cowbells! Artichokes???!!! Yeeha! I haven't had fresh, steamed artichokes in eons! Must go buy! (can you guess I'm excited???)
You know, I don't think I've ever had fresh artichokes! I love them, but haven't ever had the chance to try them in their natural state. I'd be a bit nervous ordering it from a restaurant, I think, since they're pretty tricky to eat.
Katrina! They are a lot of fun :) I had them in this restaurant in Spain before, they were just steamed I think...you grab a petal, dunk the base of it (which is where the "meat" is) in melted butter, and scrape it with your teeth to get at the meat...super yummy! And then at the end of it you get to the tender heart :) Plus you get to wear a bib and be messy!
Mila...I was in Rustans Rockwell yesterday and they still had some of the artichokes!
This may sound weird, but my memories of eating artichokes is not centered around fine dining and silverware. We used to go to Renaissance faires when I was in college, especially during the late summer. Bawdy men and women dressed in Elizabethan (kuno) costumes, jousting, etc. And there would be booths selling all sorts of weird food, including deep fried artichokes! And they'd have steamed artichokes as well, and we'd dip it into a large bowl of butter or mayo. Very messy!
I'm going to make myself a garlic aoili and steam me up some chokes!
